Eileen, however, saw an opportunity to support the patient in a different way, caring to make a connection that made the patient feel valued. With Eileen’s charm and determination, she instantly created trust.
Eileen is a problem-solver. No problem is ever too big for her to tackle. She approaches challenges head on with an upbeat, can-do attitude. This character trait is especially important in the Bass Center with the ever-changing patient population. Recently, we admitted a 15-year-old patient with a history of self-harm, psychiatric admissions, and combative behavior, diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This patient, who had been in and out of foster homes and psychiatric facilities, was admitted for an intentional overdose. Due to their aggressive behavior and multiple attempts to elope, the unit found itself reaching for every bit of resource to ensure the patient’s safety and that of staff and other patients.
Eileen’s commitment to extraordinary care, healing one child at a time, is truly highlighted during this patient's admission. The patient was in a downward spiral, feeling unwanted and finding any way to escape the hurt because they thought, “No one wants me.” Restrictions were placed to keep the patient in the room, with multiple staff members assigned to watch over them. Eileen, however, saw an opportunity to support the patient in a different way, caring to make a connection that made the patient feel valued. With Eileen’s charm and determination, she instantly created trust. She encouraged the patient to set goals while in the hospital room, such as completing activities of daily living (ADLs) that included bathing, engaging in exercises, and participating in art projects. Eileen kept the patient busy to preoccupy their time with activities, engaging in conversations, and setting goals for themself that resulted in finding joy when they were accomplished. Eileen set up a sticker chart to reward each time an activity was completed, she set clear expectations with realistic choices, and she took the time to seek out the patient during her shifts. Eileen was never assigned to them as the bedside RN, but she would constantly round on the patient to check in, letting them know that they mattered and that someone was thinking about them.
Eileen is a role model for her dedication to nursing care, going above and beyond the call of duty that supports the values of exemplary care and fostering a healthy work environment.
