I would like to spotlight the extraordinary patient advocacy taken on by Lan, a nurse for the Dept Cardiology-Oncology. Lan identified a patient who was seen in her clinic who presented with a need and jumped into action! Lan’s patient was elderly and English was not her primary language. She also had limited family support. During conversations with the patient, she informed Lan that she had limited monthly income and was challenged to meet her basic needs, including meals. Lan researched resources available to Maryland residents. Lan even called the Governor’s office to obtain information and guidance on where she should start to gather resources for her patient. Lan searched the internet to find out about other available resources. Because of Lan’s above-and-beyond efforts, the patient was able to receive emergency food assistance yesterday. She called Lan and expressed her extreme joy and appreciation. Lan also helped this patient sign up for the Meals on Wheels program and other services available that the patient was not aware that she qualified for or understood how to apply.
