When I was pregnant with our son, we found out that he would have the same genetic condition that I have. Initially, we weren’t too worried but over time we could tell that his condition was more severe and that things were more complicated than we originally thought. We ended up having to go to Baptist Hospital soon after he was born and stayed there until we were transferred back to Tulsa when he was 8 weeks old. Because of his condition, he had an incredibly small airway which was constantly obstructed by his tongue. This would cause his O2 to drop and he was incredibly positional; you had to hold him a very specific way or he would not be able to breathe. It was so scary and painful to see the anxiety and terror in his eyes whenever his airway was obstructed, knowing that there really wasn’t much we could do to help him at that time. He ended up having three surgeries, all within the first two months of his life to fix his airway.

At some point along the way, Margaret worked a weekend, and we knew quickly that we were going to like her. We began really looking forward to the weekends that Margaret was working and would be excited when we saw her. Margaret is an amazing nurse and a great advocate and cheerleader for her patients. She goes above and beyond for them every single day. Margaret was there for us and for our son throughout the whole time that we were at Baptist Hospital. We really appreciated how honest she was with us but also how she kept things positive and lifted our spirits with all her stories. What really stood out to me the most was just how much she loves our son and how much she cared for my husband and me. Margaret consistently checked in on my husband and I to make sure that we were okay throughout this process and provided encouragement when we needed it.

Knowing that our son was with someone who was as equally invested in him as we were made leaving him just a little bit easier. I knew that when she was around, our son would be well taken care of and well-loved on. I cannot say thank you enough for the peace, kindness, and love that she gave our family! I can’t wait for the day when I can tell my son all about this amazing nurse who helped save his little life when he was a tiny baby. Margaret, thank you so so much for everything you have done for our family; we are so grateful for you and will never ever forget you!!
