Bre loaded up two O2 tanks into a rolling cart and, along with a CNA, walked them to the patient’s home through debris-covered streets.
On the evening of Hurricane Helene, Bre was the on-call RN and volunteered to work from the Hospice house to help out with patients and triage calls. Throughout the worst of the storm during the night, she kept in contact with a patient who was running low on oxygen. Around 6 am, she knew the patient would soon be running out of oxygen and that EMS was already overloaded with calls and most likely would not be able to get to the patient, given the road situation. She recognized that the patient’s home address was about 1 mile from the Hospice House. Bre loaded up two O2 tanks into a rolling cart and, along with a CNA, walked them to the patient’s home through debris-covered streets. They were able to reach the patient in time and provided care until the arrangements could be made to bring the patient into the Hospice house. This was a very selfless, caring, and compassionate act that prioritized patient care.
