I was blown away by Doreen's attentiveness in a very busy environment; she always gave the patient her full attention and compassion.
My family member was brought by ambulance to the emergency department. He is an 86-year-old man and is a patient in oncology services. Doreen cared for us for her entire shift that day. My uncle was very unwell, with unstable blood pressure, and required a blood transfusion. I was blown away by Doreen's attentiveness in a very busy environment; she always gave the patient her full attention and compassion. She updated me regularly on the next steps without me having to seek this information. She patiently and kindly brought the patient out onto the commode multiple times, it was never a bother. A bed became available at 4 pm but we did not leave the emergency department until 7 pm because Doreen wanted to ensure his blood pressure was stable and the blood transfusion was underway before she was happy for him to be moved. She had such regard for her colleagues to not transfer him to their care before he was more stable. I also noted that she provided guidance to another nurse and a student nurse in a very professional and knowledgeable manner. The emergency department is a very difficult environment for patients such as my uncle, patients approaching end of life and with sensitive and complicated presentations. Doreen's professionalism and kindness on that day made a huge impact on his experience and his outcome. He still talks about the lovely nurse in the ED! She is a credit to your hospital.
