During bedside shift report, I was informed by the off going nurse that the patient's sister was in the ICU and the family was planning on withdrawing life support that day. After speaking with the patient, I decided to inform the doctor of the situation and see if there was any way we could get the patient up to see her sister before she passed. The doctor was agreeable and placed a nursing-type-in order giving me written permission to bring the patient up to see her sister.
Once I obtained permission, I spoke to the patient and obtained her sister's name and room number so that I could reach out to the nurse to see if it was even possible to bring the patient up to see her sister. I spoke to Joy, the team coordinator, and explained the situation- the patient was in the hospital, considering hospice, and she wanted to see her sister before she passed. I also explained that the patient was paralyzed and would not be able to stand to be transferred into a wheelchair. Joy suggested a stretcher bed, which would allow the patient to be transported to the ICU, as well as sit up, which was something the patient had not done in years. Brenda, the unit manager and Joy, brought the stretcher bed to my unit and helped me transfer the patient over and took her up to the unit to see her sister one last time.
The best part of the whole situation was once we got the patient transferred, and the bed was moved into the chair position, she seemed so overjoyed to be sitting instead of lying like she has been doing for the last few years. I am so grateful that I was able to provide this experience for the patient and that she was able to see her sister before she passed. I am also grateful for leaders like Brenda and Joy for brainstorming ways to allow the patient to have the experience in a safe and comfortable manner.
