I was recently seen in the ER on Sat/Sun due to severe and incessant phantom limb pain. This is not a condition I'm sure they deal with very often there, and I guess the most I expected was to be given some sort of sedative and sent on my way. I was pretty incoherent by the time I finally gave in and asked my wife to take me to the hospital. I was surprised when the doctor ordered an EKG, blood work, and some other tests in order to rule out any underlying issues that might have been the root cause of my pain.
By this point, I'd been suffering for somewhere around 14 hours, and all I really wanted was to be able to relax and sleep. I was eventually given something that did the trick, and my consistent pain was brought down significantly to a tolerable level. I wish I had caught the names of the three EMTs/ER nurses and the doctor, but I was barely able to recall my own name at that point. I cannot thank them enough for getting me through that night. I would love for them to know how much of a difference they make for their patients (at least this one).
