The patient that Amy was caring for was a 36-year-old mother with incurable metastatic cancer; the family had decided to extubate the patient to hospice. We normally don't allow any visitors under 12, but since the circumstances were different, the patient's two young boys were allowed to come back and visit with her. Amy recorded the patient's pulse with a Doppler and was going to get a Build-A-Bear made for the children. The store was about to close, and it was 30 minutes away, so she called the store and begged them to let her come and make the Build-A-Bear for the kids with their mother's heartbeat before she passed.

The store was touched by this story and stayed open an extra hour just for Amy. She was able to bring the build-a-bears back to the hospital and give them to the kids before the mother passed. They will be able to hear their mother's heartbeat for the rest of their lives. Amy showed compassion and the willingness to go above and beyond for people going through the hardest times in their lives. She is a light, and I am proud to call her my coworker.
