I wanted to share a recent experience that we had in the Emergency Department at Kent General Hospital. I had approached Kasey Petyo, the charge nurse on shift if she would be able to help obtain bloodwork for an individual with Autism who has struggled to get bloodwork in the past. This individual had not had bloodwork completed in many years due to being unable to tolerate being stuck with a needle or understand the reason for the bloodwork. This often resulted in the individual pulling away or "fighting" with the individuals attempting to get the bloodwork. The primary care doctor and the parent felt it necessary for the bloodwork to be completed so they could identify any issues that may be leading to agitation or frustration in this individual, which often led to challenging behaviors. Kasey gladly offered to help. We obtained STAT labs and met with Kasey early in the morning. Kasey, while also the charge nurse with many other duties, took time out to go over things with the individual and mom, took all the necessary steps to make the individual feel comfortable, and prepared her for getting her bloodwork completed. Kasey's kindness and patience were incredible from the start, putting mom and the individual at ease. The individual was receptive and allowed Kasey to do all the steps leading up to completing the bloodwork. Kacey obtained the bloodwork quickly and made it an experience that could lead to the individual being even more successful in the future. I was so impressed with her professionalism and compassion that day.
