One night shift, I found myself struggling to care for a young woman with late-stage Ewing sarcoma in her right thigh. She was distraught, uncooperative, stressed, and extremely anxious about the upcoming bedside wound care. Although I have experience with wound care, it was challenging to embody the level of compassion and understanding needed in that moment. I stepped out briefly with my PCT, and fortunately, John Robinson happened to be passing by. Despite his busy workload, he willingly stepped in, introduced himself to the patient, and began speaking to her in a calm, reassuring manner. John patiently gave her the space to express her feelings, taking as much time as needed to create a friendly, safe environment where she felt comfortable opening up and cooperating. As I observed him, I thought, "That’s the kind of caregiver I’d want for myself or my family if we were ever hospitalized." Since then, I have often reflected on that moment and aspired to be like John.
