He never lost sight of the person in the bed and gave his entire self to ensuring they felt his support and clinical interventions to improve the situation.
Clinical Skills:
Nathan Payton's clinical skills are extensive. He quickly notes changes in his patients, responds urgently, and uses high-quality interventions. He also seeks out the support of the multidisciplinary team and provides background for his colleagues, leading to exceptional and finely orchestrated teamwork. I was informed that his work recently focused on advocacy and clinical composure with a patient whose situation had significantly deteriorated.
Compassionate Care:
Nate was the key link at the worst possible moments for our patient’s family and the patients themselves. He never lost sight of the person in the bed and gave his entire self to ensuring they felt his support and clinical interventions to improve the situation. Knowing he was just what the family needed at that moment is a true statement, as they were given kindness, attention, and truly patient-centered care without hesitation.
Exemplary Service:
Being in the patient and their family's situation meant that the nurse would have a lot asked of them. Nate went above and beyond, by holding the clinical critical thinking in one place and the true matters of the heart in a parallel place. By offering both aspects, Nate made the patient and family feel natural and gave them the awareness that they were truly seen, which held space for a true gift.
Continued Commitment:
Nate came to work every day as we worked on this complex patient, who was ready to find new ways to improve their comfort, support the family, and minimize any miscommunication or gaps in care. He looked for opportunities to extend himself every shift, and never, ever looked for an easier way out or for someone else to do what he set out to do. As I watched the shared hugs and tears shed, I realized I was watching nothing short of a transformational moment that they would never forget.
