I’m confident Madi’s bravery and prompt timing of this made my dad’s final days comfortable and peaceful.
My dad was diagnosed with DLBCL cancer that had spread to his brain. We were sent to Mayo Clinic for CAR-T Cell therapy. That was successfully completed, and we were sent home until my dad showed signs of progression about a month later. Madi Turner, RN, was his advocate from the minute his helicopter landed until a grueling month later when he took his last breath. Madi saw my dad slowly declining day in and day out. With this decline and signs of aggressive disease progression, she saw a human being that was exhausted from the harsh chemo treatments, she saw a husband no longer able to hold his wife, and saw a dad that was not able to talk to his daughter. She saw that he no longer had a good quality of life. Knowing he was scheduled for another round of chemotherapy in a few days, she had a hard conversation with my mom and the providers, stating that based on her clinical observations, current clinical course, and his continued decline, a goals-of-care conversation would be the respectful thing to do. The decision to bring that up took a lot of courage, compassion, and respect from Madi. She was an incredible advocate for my dad and our family. That was the hardest conversation we’ve ever had to have, and we decided to not proceed with chemo but instead keep him comfortable. I’m confident Madi’s bravery and prompt timing of this made my dad’s final days comfortable and peaceful, as palliative care took over, and he ended his time here on Earth at Mayo Clinic.
