Every interaction with her, even if she is correcting you, makes you feel empowered.
I have always admired Diana Thomas in her role; she brings such confidence, knowledge, and peacefulness with her presence, regardless of how busy the unit is or how critical a situation may be. Once she steps in, I just know everything will be okay, regardless of the outcome. Diana spends time teaching and engaging the nurses so that they learn and feel valued. Every interaction with her, even if she is correcting you, makes you feel empowered. She is not “pushy”, but her presence commands respect, which is given by every member of the team as far as I can see due to her professionalism and consistency. I wish we had more leaders like Diana and wish to emulate her in my professional journey. One night, we had a patient who was severely anxious and agitated; several persons tried to calm them unsuccessfully. Family was there and were getting anxious seeing what was happening, respiratory was waiting to do an EKG. Diana walked by, assessed what was happening, and came in and started talking with the patient. Within minutes she had the patient, family members, and even me feeling so calm and relaxed. She didn’t leave at that point but stayed with the patient until all necessary tests were done, and she was sure the patient was okay, and I was okay. When she left, the family was amazed at how she came in and improved everything. I learned so much from just seeing how she interacted with the patient and the family that night. This is the nurse I would want if I were ever a patient. That same night, another RN besides me had a patient who was dying, DNR/DNI. Diana transitioned to multiple other phone calls dealing with several other issues and not missing a beat. She pulled up a chair and sat with the patient as they died. She spoke in his ears, telling him his family loved him, called their names, told him they were on the way, and that he wasn’t alone. Diana stayed at his bedside for at least 30 minutes while he peacefully transitioned, then had a moment of silence after he was pronounced. I was almost in tears. This level of compassion cannot be taught.
