I hope to one day be the type of nurse Eleanor s; she is fantastic!
Eleanor consistently goes above and beyond to provide compassionate care for patients, their families and staff. The PICU and I are so fortunate to have Eleanor as a band 7; she never fails to brighten the mood in the unit, she is always such a friendly face on shift, and she really shows her support for everyone.
One event that particularly stood out to me, but something that frequently occurs, is when Eleanor spent time walking around the unit, offering support to staff, and checking in with family members. One particular family member was quite upset and Eleanor spent time sitting down with this parent, offering her tissues, and kind words. This is something she often does, which can dramatically influence a family's experience in the ICU. Not only is she compassionate and kind to parents and patients, but she is also extremely supportive and always shows up for staff in what can sometimes be an overwhelming and busy environment. She takes time to check in with every single staff member to see if they need anything whether that be help with cares, medication checks or just checking in with staff members wellbeing - this really helps to improve staff morale, staff feel well supported, patients can receive optimal care and staff are then able to give families the best support.
I personally feel Eleanor has made a massive impact as a band 7 on PICU, when she is on shift, myself and others know everyone will be supported and patients will receive the best care possible. Eleanor demonstrates every single one of the 6 Cs of nursing:
She consistently shows compassion to all our patients, holding their hands, talking to them, offering support to families and staff.
She is caring to everyone whose path she crosses, offering a friendly face, a supportive conversation, and a box of tissues if needed.
Her competence is shown in the way she leads and manages the ward, helping in emergency situations, offering help to staff with her experience and skills.
Her communication is exceptional; staff, patients, and families never feel alone, and she demonstrates empathy in every conversation she has.
Her courage and commitment are shown in everything she does; she is committed to ensuring that PICU shifts run smoothly, whether that be as nurse in charge or team leader, ensuring every patient receives the best care and staff are supported to provide this. PICU would not be the same without her and I wanted to express my gratitude and admiration, I hope to one day be the type of nurse Eleanor s; she is fantastic!
