Chelsea’s strength, courage, and extraordinary compassion helped us through the day. She met us at every level of emotion and never waivered in her support or focus.
Chelsea Vincelette is the embodiment of family-centered care. She was not only excellent in her clinical care and diligent focus on the safety and comfort of our daughter, but she was constantly checking in on my husband and me as individuals. Chelsea was a consistently positive and encouraging presence for us, even when she was not assigned as A's nurse. She allowed us to be involved with A’s care as often as possible. She included me in the many safety rounds/meetings she initiated for A’s comfort and well-being.
Not only did I learn so much during these meetings as a mother in the NICU, but I experienced the effect of them firsthand as they often changed the way A was being cared for. Whether there was a safety concern regarding positioning, over her many lines, or for her to get a new bed, there was always a comforting measure taken after these meetings were called. I love that Chelsea would come to each new day with a safety agenda or ideas on keeping A as optimally comfortable as possible. After learning that our daughter was surely going to die and experiencing Chelsea’s thoughtful care, we asked if she would be willing to see us through the most challenging day of our lives, to which she agreed without hesitation. She walked with us through our daughter’s last day, last moments, and the moments following her passing. Chelsea’s strength, courage, and extraordinary compassion helped us through the day. She met us at every level of emotion and never waivered in her support or focus. She did her part as a nurse, but she did a more significant part as a human being, even crying with us and holding me when she saw I needed it. As I often lay awake at night, unwillingly recounting A’s last, I usually see Chelsea’s eyes overflowing with compassion. I am comforted knowing we had someone who understood and cared for all three of us.
