She never once lost focus on what she was doing and continued to ask for help from other nurses that were in the room so that we could ensure that both mom and baby were safe.
One early Saturday morning, as we were all getting started for the day, a patient approached the ED pivot desk stating that she was in labor and that her water had broken. The patient was initially brought back to an ED room as it was believed that delivery was imminent. Once evaluated, the patient was thought to have a little bit of time before delivery so she was being transported to L and D by Paula RN and a CNA. As they were in the elevator, almost to L and D, the patient stated that she felt the baby was coming out. Without missing a beat, Paula slipped on sterile gloves, which she had grabbed in case of emergency, which was such a smart decision on her part. They all headed back down to the ED since they weren't able to make it up to labor and delivery, and suddenly we saw and heard them rolling down the triage hallway with Paula on the stretcher holding the baby's head while she calmed the mom by reassuring her she was doing amazing. As we continued to roll down the halls of the ED to get to a room, Paula handled an extremely stressful situation and navigated it with ease, all while ensuring both mom and baby were safe. We rolled into a room with the patient as mom was delivering baby, and Paula continued to reassure her that she was doing great as she removed the cord that was wrapped around the baby's neck and began tending to baby as the MDs began examining both mom and baby. She never once lost focus on what she was doing and continued to ask for help from other nurses that were in the room so that we could ensure that both mom and baby were safe.

The amount of teamwork displayed was truly amazing, as we all bound together to help with something that we don't see very often. Paula was truly a shining star in this situation. Her knowledge and experience ensured that the patient was taken care of in the best way possible. We couldn't have asked for a better nurse to be part of this crazy experience. Paula's professionalism and ability to stay calm under pressure were evident. We are so lucky to have her in the emergency department!
