Jennifer provided empathetic and compassionate care and was able to relate to the patient due to her own experience with a similar issue in the past.
Jennifer Wang went above and beyond for one of her patients while in the role of charge nurse. A patient had been admitted 4 days postpartum after maternal complications. She was admitted to a shared room on a medical-surgical floor, where her husband could not stay overnight, and her newborn could not visit. She was having challenges with pumping enough breast milk without the proper supplies, because she did not expect to be separated from her newborn at this stage. Jennifer advocated for the patient to be moved to an appropriate unit where her husband could stay overnight and her newborn could be in the room with her. Once moved, she would also have a way to pump in privacy without fear of the other patient or visitors seeing her. Jennifer advocated for the patient receiving the proper supplies needed to pump effectively, and made numerous phone calls to the OB unit trying to coordinate this.
After discovering the hospital does not stock the tools needed to decrease anxiety and strain of her current pumping methods, Jennifer crafted a makeshift maternity bra out of the traditional mastectomy bra carried by the hospital. This was designed to assist the patient in being able to attach a pump to both breasts at the same time, increasing efficiency and allowing her to be hands-free while pumping. She also spent extra time teaching the patient’s husband how to assist with cleaning the pump components, to further minimize the responsibilities of the patient during her own recovery. Jennifer provided empathetic and compassionate care and was able to relate to the patient due to her own experience with a similar issue in the past. The patient expressed countless gratitude for the way this nurse treated her and her family holistically, and anticipated all their needs. She also said she felt safer and truly heard once this nurse started caring for her.
