Avery, words cannot express how appreciative we are for all you did to advocate for J, and for our family. You truly embody every important characteristic of a nurse.
It started out like a normal opening hunting day but ended in tragedy for our family and friends. Our dear J had notified the family in excitement that she had gotten a deer, but then later was found unresponsive in her tree stand. Rescue teams safely got her down and onto a Med Flight helicopter and she was transported to UW around 1900. There, we received the tragic news that she had suffered a severe brain hemorrhage, and she would not be able to sustain life as she would have wanted to live.
We were heartbroken, distraught, and emotional. J's family decided to pursue organ donation, as she would have wanted to give other people the gift of life. Countless family members and friends surged the hospital (after visiting hours) to say their goodbyes to one of the most kind, caring, vibrant women we have ever had the pleasure of knowing and loving. Security was apprehensive about the sheer number of people who came to support our family, say goodbye, and grieve. An angel emerged in the form of B4/4's night shift CTL Avery Noel, who advocated for family and friends to be allowed to gather in a large family lounge off unit, and for visitors to be able to see J two at a time to say their goodbyes. This compassion, advocacy, and gesture meant the world to us and helped to ease our grief in such a difficult time. She continued to advocate for all of us during J's honor walk days later, in which over 40 friends and family, as well as countless UW staff members, lined the hallways (again after usual visiting hours). She walked with us and recorded the entire procession, all the way up to the Med Flight helicopter where J was transported to Meriter for her organ donation.

Additionally, we want to say thank you to all the other staff members who cared for J and our family during this time. You gave us your compassion, and we leaned on your strength and knowledge. You kept J comfortable, kept us updated, and informed us of what to expect throughout the entire process. We cannot thank you enough for your kindness, compassion, and care.
