One day in particular I will never forget. I made my usual call to check in with our mom’s primary nurse, and as I had feared, the news was grim. I was told that Mom was not doing well and was showing no signs of improvement. I expressed how our mom was so far from her baseline and how she was doing better when she was admitted than presently. I was distraught, I felt very concerned that from our perspective, it felt like there must be something else that could be done to address the source of her condition and obvious issues. Enter this nurse, Jewel, an incredible member of the nursing team at Trinity Health Oakland Hospital. Quite frankly, in our opinion, the person responsible for changing the trajectory of Mom's ongoing health issues. She calmed me down, speaking to me in the most professional yet compassionate and reassuring manner. I was beside myself with worry and regret for being so far away and unable to be present to advocate for our mom. She patiently listened to me explain my mom's mental health situation and history, all the while consoling me as I broke down. I remember thinking at the time, if she can have such an understanding approach with me, imagine how incredibly effective she must be caring for her patients. There are not enough words to properly convey how grateful we will forever be to her for her ability to contact one of Mom's attending physicians and request that she be transferred to a medical floor to run some tests, ruling out the possibility of infection, etc. Her interactions and proactive measures got the ball rolling, so to speak. She was instrumental in answering our family's concerns and all the while continuing to lovingly assure us from a great distance. We realize what an immensely overwhelming and exhausting position health care professionals experience daily. We know that there is burnout and simply not enough hours in the day or sometimes bodies to care for all of the sick and vulnerable people they encounter. We have such respect and admiration for those individuals who are employed in these supremely challenging circumstances. We feel so strongly about the importance of recognition in the workplace and hope that someone reading our story will acknowledge the efforts made by her to our mother and us. Jewel has the sweetest nature, a gentle approach, and a caring and thoughtful manner. It is plain to "see", or in our case, "hear", the evidence of her work ethic, her drive and dedication, as well as her respect for her fellow colleagues. We will forever be grateful for her intervention and the kindness she exhibited to our family. In our opinion, she exemplifies a hardworking, thorough, devoted, and detail-oriented professional with the added benefit of displaying a complete understanding and reassurance to her patients and their families. This nurse is most surely an invaluable asset to Trinity Health Oakland Hospital, a highly regarded co-worker, and an unbelievable role model. Most importantly, she is a kind, compassionate, and genuine human being with the biggest, most beautiful heart.
