She held my hand and gave me a hug that I needed and never received from the care team 33 years ago.
One of the symbolic meanings of the DAISY flower is “childbirth and new beginnings.” The DAISY has always been the flower of my choice to place on my son’s grave. For each hospital patient, it is what it is, and Nurse Danielle knows what “it” looks like. Hospital patients often have no choice but to embark upon a new beginning. Exceptional nurses open the door and facilitate patients stepping through that door. In a recent hospitalization, I relived the birth and death of my infant son and experienced grief reactions that were as deep and severe as that day 33 years ago. Danielle came into my room to comfort me. She listened to my story and shared her story. She held my hand and gave me a hug that I needed and never received from the care team 33 years ago. Danielle continued to check in on me as the days went by. She is truly a gift to the sick and bereaved. She reached out and touched the flame. I am forever grateful for her compassion and professional care.
