The key theme in Renae's care is that she will always conduct a thorough assessment, she will always advocate for her patient, and she will not give up until her concerns are addressed.
I would like to make the highest recommendation for nursing care and award to our wonderful recovery room nurse Renea Patton. On three occasions in the last six months, her actions have led to the treatment of very severe complications in the recovery room. Renea is very confident and, at the same time, willing to learn. She is a big advocate for her patients and high-quality care.
Two examples of how her actions saved patients include: Case 1, Renae identified femoral artery bleed post-surgical intervention by assessing hematoma development, informing Cardiology and CT surgery. She monitored the patient, kept a close eye on the hematoma, assisted MDs, helped with the ultrasound, showed concern, and stabilized the patient in the recovery room until they were able to receive further intervention, resulting in a positive outcome. A true patient advocate.
Case 2, Renae identified post-operative complications post shoulder surgery. Her intuition and skills in assessing upper extremity pain told her that what could be a normal finding for this type of surgery was not in this case. Renae identified that even though the pulse oximeter read a normal reading greater than 95% on room air, the waveform was dampened and could be indicative of decreased arterial blood flow. She was persistent in contacting providers until her concern was taken into consideration and investigated by a provider. Her assessment was correct, and the patient received emergency intervention to restore blood flow. This shows her dedication to a comprehensive clinical picture. At the surface level, this patient was experiencing normal post-operative symptoms, but with a deeper dive, she saved this patient from serious complications. The key theme in Renae's care is that she will always conduct a thorough assessment, she will always advocate for her patient, and she will not give up until her concerns are addressed. I am very proud to have her on the team, and she is an excellent nurse.
In closing, here is a message from the provider and the Vascular Team: "If the patient is not doing well in the recovery room, that is the time to address any issues and take the patient to the operating room for a repeat evaluation. Renea is very strong in her postoperative assessments. She has a good sense of vascular care and the vascular exam. She is very dedicated to making herself the best post-op recovery room nurse that she can be. She has a commitment to excellence and a commitment to patient care. We in the vascular program trust her judgment and her assessment to the highest level".
