When she was lucid, Luis asked her questions about her comfort, her needs, and her wants.
My wife was admitted to the ICU in serious distress. She was suffering from stage 4+ breast cancer with a raging infection and extremely low blood pressure. Upon arriving at the ICU, we could see the staff working to get her comfortable. After the initial set-up, my daughter and I met the person who would be her nurse for what would be the longest night of our lives.
Luis introduced themselves and got to work. Throughout the night, Luis monitored her diligently and was at her side 10 to 15 times an hour, checking vitals, adjusting the I.V. feed rates, adjusting the bed pad, adjusting, checking, adjusting, checking, adjusting! Luis continued to question myself and my daughter about my wife and her condition and her medical history while carefully fussing over her with all the care of a family member. When she was lucid, Luis asked her questions about her comfort, her needs, and her wants.
While doing all this, Luis also asked after us, "Can I get you anything?" "Are YOU ok?" etc., etc.. We just knew we had the best nurse right there in front of us. A very telling example: My wife's lips were raw from a long day of labored breathing. Luis commented on it, and M, as always, said she was just fine. Luis left the room, came back with salve, used sterilizing foam and gloves, and squeezed some salve onto the new glove. Luis then smeared the salve onto her lips. Upon seeing it had smeared onto her skin, Luis, using another finger, gently wiped off the excess. Luis stopped his hectic pace to do a gentle and kind thing for her. She would have approved. Both myself and my daughter approved. Professional, efficient, effective, and kind. Someone we and my wife were so fortunate to have looking after her. Thank you, Luis! You will always be remembered. You are part of her life forever.
