I was a patient of Rachel’s until the day before I left the CICU when she was off shift. I was diagnosed with a blood clot in my left ventricle, which absolutely terrified me. Coupled with the stress of final exams for my first semester of college, the hospital was the last place I wanted to be. The moment I met Rachel on the first night at the hospital, I immediately felt so much more at ease. As the nights passed, I continued to grow more anxious. Rachel sat beside me, talked me through my feelings, guided me through mindfulness exercises, and explained every little thing I wanted to learn about cardiology and EKGs. Rachel seemed to understand my interest in the science behind my condition, and her willingness to patiently discuss all aspects of my heart was amazing. Rachel had a unique ability to distract me from the present situation in a way most nurses couldn’t, even going so far as to lower the telemetry's volume and cover it with a towel for me, as it was a significant trigger for my anxiety, causing me to stare at it constantly. The last shift I had with Rachel was very sad for me because I knew that the next night I would have another nurse. I truly experienced a high level of care from Nurse Rachel. She constantly met me where I was and dedicated so much time to keeping me at ease during the most stressful situation I had faced since being diagnosed with heart failure. It's also important to mention that her care extended beyond just me; she also looked after my friends who visited or stayed overnight with me, ensuring their comfort as well. I left the hospital after my stay, always remembering her compassionate care. Despite how unexpected and stressful my admission was mentally, I will always find light and joy in my stay because of her.
