She spent as much time as she could engaging the patient in play and creating a warm and inviting environment during a time that was scary to him.
During Sam’s time at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHP), she exemplified the kind and compassionate nurse we all hope to be. She was particularly drawn to a very young patient who had been admitted from another hospital for a developmental delay and failure to thrive. This patient did not have any caregivers with him, nor any toys, clothes, or items of his own. Samantha advocated for this patient to have age and developmentally appropriate toys, which she procured from the child life specialist. She spent as much time as she could engaging the patient in play and creating a warm and inviting environment during a time that was scary to him. She worked hard to encourage this patient to eat and drink, a main goal of the patient and one that he was not previously doing. She found that he liked a particular type of Ensure and communicated to all the staff so that they could have plenty on the unit for him to have. The next day she arrived at clinical with not only clothing for this patient but had also purchased clothing of all different sizes and types to be stocked on the unit for any other child that arrives in a similar situation or needed clothes. She recognized the need for this patient and others to feel comfortable and safe in the hospital and her gift was deeply appreciated by the patient, and the unit staff. This act was just one of many compassionate acts Sam performed during her time at Children's Hospital.
