Kayla took her time, spoke with kindness, and ensured my grandmother was as comfortable as possible.
My grandmother was preparing for a lumpectomy, a procedure that carried not only physical concerns but emotional weight as well. She has always told me she is a "hard stick" when it comes to needles and dreads them every time. The thought of an IV or a blood draw fills her with anxiety, and facing surgery only made things more overwhelming. But on this day, Kayla made all that feel okay. From the moment she entered the area, Kayla’s warmth and attentiveness were evident. She leaned beside my grandmother to speak with her, making eye contact and listening intently, ensuring she felt heard and respected. When it was time for the IV, my grandmother braced herself, expecting the usual discomfort and frustration. But Kayla approached it with such skill and reassurance that, for the first time in a long time, my grandmother didn’t feel like just another "hard stick." Instead, she felt like a person whose worries mattered. Kayla took her time, spoke with kindness, and ensured my grandmother was as comfortable as possible. Kayla explained every step of the process with patience and clarity, easing any uncertainty with her reassuring tone. She carefully adjusted my grandmother’s pillow and smoothed her blanket, small gestures that reflected her deep commitment to comfort and dignity. As my grandmother was prepared for surgery, Kayla’s presence remained a source of calm. When she thought no one was watching, she offered a gentle smile—one that spoke volumes, conveying reassurance and care beyond words. When it was time to go, Kayla walked beside my grandmother’s bed, her presence a silent promise that she was in good hands. It’s not just the medical expertise that makes a great nurse, but the kindness and humanity they bring to their work. Kayla exemplifies this at every step, and for that, I am deeply grateful.
