Amanda and other team members recognized the need for psychological support during this trying time and arranged to purchase art supplies for patients to use during their stay, helping to take their minds off some of the immediate unpleasant aspects of the situation.
Amanda is a staff nurse on the oncology unit, 7 Monti, where one hundred percent of patients are treated for blood cancer. She has been with Northwell Health at North Shore University for over five years and provides extraordinarily compassionate care. Amanda consistently demonstrates this by striving for clinical excellence and helping her colleagues achieve the same goal.

We recently had a gentleman on our unit for over three weeks undergoing treatment who was very ill, and at times the outcome was quite uncertain. The gentleman had small children and a wife at home and was very depressed spending Mother’s Day in the hospital. With limited resources, Amanda wanted to do something special not only for this patient but also for other patients on 7 Monti who would be in the hospital during Mother’s Day. Amanda and other team members recognized the need for psychological support during this trying time and arranged to purchase art supplies for patients to use during their stay, helping to take their minds off some of the immediate unpleasant aspects of the situation. The smiles of joy on family faces when the patients presented them artificial flowers in beautiful vases and handmade cards on Mother’s Day were a testament to Amanda and her team's efforts. This did not stop Amanda; she reached out to our Volunteer Department, which was willing to donate its time for music sessions by playing the piano in our patient lounge. These sessions aimed to help ease patients' minds during treatment and address other psychosocial concerns they might face. With Amanda being very influential in organizing activities for our patients, other team members brought in board games, dominoes, and playing cards to help our patients enhance their coping skills and reduce physical and emotional stress.

Another extraordinary moment occurred when Amanda wrote to several small businesses to see if they would donate a small token of appreciation to our patients who spend considerable time in the hospital and will continue to do so during the holidays. Several businesses donated free haircuts with wash and set, makeup kits with complimentary makeovers, scarves, hats, gloves, and books/magazines, which our patients were thrilled to receive. Pictures were taken and sent back to the small businesses along with a thank-you note. Amanda is always looking for ways to brighten the patients’ and their families’ days during their time in the hospital, as it can be a long stay. Her caring and compassion for her patients make her even more amazing, as this award is given to her.

Amanda serves as a mentor to staff; she precepts newly hired RNs and interns and supports them through the challenges that can arise while caring for the oncological patient population. She is well-respected by her peers and truly loved by her patients. We feel fortunate to have her as one of our own and on our team! Amanda is made for this! Amanda is a true DAISY nurse, as she provides a remarkable patient experience, offers extraordinary compassionate care, and honors the human spirit, serving as a role model of clinical excellence.
