Leadership and Professionalism
The CACN team exemplifies leadership and clinical excellence, consistently striving for the highest level of professional advancement at Cincinnati Children’s. They lead by example, with two nurses serving as safety coaches and four as CLABSI representatives, reinforcing best practices and patient safety. Their commitment extends to research and education—all nurses are CITI-trained and actively contribute to research aimed at improving patient care. They play a pivotal role in training ICU nurses (PICU, CICU, and NICU) in CRRT and spearhead "CRRT University" to educate interdisciplinary teams beyond the organization.

Additionally, the nursing team is organizing and hosting the 1st KidneyBee Summit in May 2025. The Summit is designed to offer an interactive educational platform for nurses and advanced practice providers from around the world who care for children receiving CRRT.

Compassion and Patient-Centered Care
The CACN team is known not only for their technical expertise but also for their compassion and patient-centered approach. In intensive care settings, they build strong rapport with both bedside staff and patients and families, providing reassurance and clear communication. In outpatient settings, they foster lasting connections, often becoming a source of comfort and support. Their ability to explain intricate therapies in an understandable way alleviates anxiety for both patients and caregivers. Whether engaging with patients through play, music, or conversation, they exemplify the essence of holistic care.

Commitment to Patient Safety and Innovation
Patient safety and experience are at the core of the CACN team’s mission. They uphold the highest standards by ensuring timely interventions, maintaining meticulous attention to detail, and questioning deviations from protocols when necessary. Their commitment to transparency, quality improvement, and research reinforces a culture of excellence. Specialized training enables them to participate in groundbreaking studies, advancing nephrology care and shaping the future of extracorporeal therapies.

Exemplary Teamwork and Impact
Collaboration is the hallmark of the CACN team. They demonstrate an unparalleled sense of camaraderie, supporting one another to ensure a seamless workflow that enhances patient care. Despite their small size, they make a profound impact—a mighty team with an outsized influence on the institution. Their contributions elevate the standard of care at Cincinnati Children’s, inspiring those privileged to work alongside them as evidenced by the unsolicited feedback from colleagues over the years (see a few examples below). This nomination is a testament to their extraordinary dedication, expertise, and selfless commitment to improving the lives of critically ill children.

"The CACN nursing team is the best example of what collaborative work in medicine should be. This work results in excellent and consistent delivery of care and improving outcomes in critically ill children. In addition, this team’s dedication is respected, appreciated, and seen as a standard of what we should provide when working in any academic and non-academic institution.  When the CACN nurses are involved in a child’s care, the providers and the parents are aware that they will receive the best of the best; the nurses’ confidence, consistency, and professionalism make the parents trust them with their children’s health. This is an amazing team, and we all should be proud of the opportunity to work with you.” - Dr. Francisco Flores, MD Clinical Director of MARS, Professor of Pediatrics Division of Nephrology & Hypertension

As you can see, the Center for Acute Care Nephrology is respected as one of the most expert clinical teams in all of CCHMC, both internally and externally.  I can think of no other more deserving team for the DAISY Award.
