He didn't hesitate to stay or help and took the time to also talk to the patient and his wife, explaining what was done and what to expect following the plan of care.
Right after shift change, the charge got a call that there was a patient up front who was not feeling well and needed help. Critical care went down, and I, along with one of the overflow nurses, ended up following. What we thought was a patient who needed help ended up being a patient in full cardiac arrest. William Roberts was leaving and just happened to be there at the right moment. He threw his things down and started CPR. I ran back to get the stretcher and called charge to let her know the patient was in full arrest and we needed a provider, resp, and more hands. I returned with the stretcher, we loaded the patient up, and went right to trauma. Bill was able to bring the patient back, and he stayed with the patient until the patient was stable. He placed an IV, helped with meds, charting, and after the patient was stable and in a room, he then left. Keep in mind, this was now like 40 minutes after he had clocked out to leave. He didn't hesitate to stay or help and took the time to also talk to the patient and his wife, explaining what was done and what to expect following the plan of care. He displayed leadership, teamwork, critical thinking, compassion, and care.
