Alyssa comforted me throughout the entire end of my admission. She gave me caring hug and told me they are all there for me if I needed to cry.
I was admitted to 2 South for a difficult situation. I arrived on the floor, where I met Alyssa and another nurse. I had met Alyssa prior to my admission, she allowed me to shadow her during my nursing school rotation on L&D a few weeks ago. She showed me how to care for mothers and babies who were recently born, and gave me such a positive experience that I was excited to have my child here. This situation was not so positive and a new experience for Alyssa. My admission was training her on how to care for a mother who lost her child at 23 weeks and needed to be delivered.
When I saw Alyssa's face, I was pleased and saddened. I knew I was in good hands, but I also knew I was a first for her. I think I even apologized to her for causing her this experience. Both nurses were incredibly professional and caring when doing my intake. They talked me through everything. Alyssa attempted to get an IV started on my dehydrated arms, but she was unsuccessful. Her preceptor also attempted and was unsuccessful, and finally had anesthesia attempt, which was also unsuccessful. They decided to stop trying and gave me some water to hydrate, in hopes that it would help, and it did. Alyssa was able to get the IV started. My day progressed as they transitioned me into labor.
Alyssa stayed in the room or was constantly checking in on me throughout her shift. She reminded me often it was going to be okay, and she was there for me to make me comfortable. Her shift ended, and she introduced me to the nurse who would watch over me during the night- where I made little progress of delivering.
The next morning, Alyssa returned to the unit to care for me once again. I delivered my daughter the following day with my boyfriend, Alyssa, and the doctor, and what seemed to be the entire 2 South staff by my side. Everyone was so supportive on the worst day of my life.
Alyssa comforted me throughout the entire end of my admission. She gave me caring hug and told me they are all there for me if I needed to cry. She presented me with a memory box before I was discharged and told me to open it when I was ready, whether it was tomorrow or months from now.
She and her preceptor showed compassion, and I will never forget the care I received from the entire 2 South.
I wanted to say Thank you Alyssa and all the nurses, doctors and techs on 2 South, who walked her through my darkest day. I truly appreciate the compassion, gentle hand and shoulder to cry on that you show not only me but the St. Joseph’s patients.
