I felt assured that I was not a weak and needy patient, but my pain and discomfort were warranted, and Brianda was going to do everything in her power to make me feel better—which she did!
I was at Medical City Dallas for a total hysterectomy. I had never been in a hospital as a patient or had any surgery prior to this, except when I had an unplanned C-section 34 years ago. I didn’t quite know what to expect from the hospital stay, and I definitely was not prepared for the pain and discomfort that I was going to endure post-op. Brianda was my first nurse when I went to my room after leaving recovery. I was a little loopy from the surgery and anesthesia, and I don’t remember many of the details from that afternoon and evening; however, the one thing I do remember, and I will never forget, is that I kept apologizing because I felt like I was asking a lot of my nurse to help me get comfortable. I was in a lot of pain. The discomfort was overwhelming, and I was basically pretty miserable. At one point, I asked Brianda for something, and I said, "I’m sorry to keep asking you for things," and she said, "I don’t know why you are sorry; you had major surgery and are in pain rightfully so, and I’m here to help you with that." I can’t begin to tell you how comforting that made me feel. I felt assured that I was not a weak and needy patient, but my pain and discomfort were warranted, and Brianda was going to do everything in her power to make me feel better—which she did! Again, I honestly don’t remember a lot of details from that first day, but that one statement from Brianda helped me at a critical time when I was so uncomfortable, and it has continued to aid me through my recovery. Since I’ve been home, and when I’m not feeling great or get frustrated that I’m not my normal self yet, I remember her words, “You just had major surgery. You have a right to feel like this,” and it keeps me going, puts things back into perspective, and puts a smile on my face. Brianda obviously cares for her patients and their well-being. Thank God for nurses like that to care for those who have had surgeries!
