Over the course of the past several months, I have observed Alana Woodfill going above and beyond for a vulnerable Veteran experiencing chronic homelessness. This particular case has been very challenging due to several mental health and substance abuse issues. Due to the nature of this Veteran’s needs, it was discussed that a team approach would work best for him. She has stepped up in a very big way with the unique challenges of this Veteran’s care. He does not respond to scheduled appointments. Therefore, the only time care can be provided is when he drops in unannounced.

Anytime she is present when he arrives, she will drop everything to make sure she meets with him to continue rapport and trust building and do what she can to move him towards permanent housing. This has taken a lot of time and patience on her part. Where others may not have been flexible with the way this Veteran presents, she has utilized creative problem-solving skills and person-centered approaches. Alana has shown she exemplifies ICARE values not only in her work with this Veteran, but all the Veterans she serves.

There have been other Veterans with severe MH issues experiencing homelessness, where she has been a strong advocate. She works with a vulnerable, challenging population and has always treated her Vets with kindness, compassion, and dignity. I am honored to be her teammate.
