Through an established rapport, she eased mom’s usual anxiety and apprehension over IVs. She successfully and skillfully got the IV in on her first try.
During a long hospitalization, you meet many nurses. There are many very good nurses on 8 H&V; however, one stood out above the rest. She was both our nurse and charge nurse several times, Laila. She gives everything she has to her patient. You can see she nurses from the heart. A day after having her as mom’s nurse, Laila had poked her head in just to check on my mom because she cared. In that moment, another one of Mom’s IVs from the special IV team had failed. Needing Zofran quickly and not wanting to put mom through the extra wait for the IV team, Laila asked her assigned nurse and then my mom for permission to give it a try. Mom has deep, small, rolling veins that split, making IVs difficult for most. Without hesitation, Laila acted. Through an established rapport, she eased mom’s usual anxiety and apprehension over IVs. She successfully and skillfully got the IV in on her first try. No extra wait, no multiple attempts. IV secured and Zofran immediately administered. All this effort to someone who was no longer her patient that day. Compassion and teamwork seemed effortless on her part. She definitely made a difference in my mom’s care. She should be recognized and rewarded. Thank you, Laila
