From the very beginning, Katie was more than just a nurse; she was a source of comfort, strength, and unwavering support.
Katie has always gone above and beyond in treating my son. His father and I have always felt the most comfortable when Katie is my son’s nurse. It feels as if we've known each other for a long time because she treats us as one of her friends. There are times when doctors throw a bunch of information at us all at once, but Katie always makes sure to sit with us in my son’s room to explain everything more thoroughly, and we're able to ask her lots of questions. She also just goes into the room just to chit-chat with us because she knows sometimes, we just need a conversation to get by the day. Katie has brought in some of her friends from work to my son’s room to show how cute he is, so now lots of nurses and RTs just swing by to see how he is doing. Everyone in the PICU knows my son is Katie’s baby by the way she shows her love for him, and she cares for him so much!

My son was admitted to the Scottish Rite PICU. Living with muscular dystrophy, he suffered an accident in the shower that resulted in both of his femurs breaking. Tragically, a fat embolism was released from his muscle, attacking his already fragile respiratory system and placing him on a ventilator.
Those were some of the darkest, most heartbreaking days of our lives. But in that darkness, we met our primary nurse, and she became a light for our family. From the very beginning, Katie was more than just a nurse; she was a source of comfort, strength, and unwavering support. She listened to our concerns, advocated for our son whenever possible, and cared for him in the most incredible way.
Trusting medical staff has never been easy for me, as my son has been through so much. However, Katie took the time to truly know him and to understand his needs, personality, and journey. Because of her, we felt safe leaving his room, knowing he was in the best hands.
We remained in the PICU for 24 long days, and through it all, Katie made our stay not just bearable but filled with kindness and compassion. Every time she returned for her shifts, we felt a sense of relief because we knew we had someone who genuinely cared, not just for our son but for our entire family.
We will never forget what this nurse did for us. Thank you for being our anchor in one of the hardest times of our lives. You are truly one of a kind. Thank you!
