He would sit down, hold her hand, look at her in the eyes, and talk to her- whether she needed reassurance about what was happening or simply a bit of encouragement.
My daughter was in the Neuro ICU last week for a revision surgery after the brain tumor that had been removed in October 2024 returned. Having the same surgery twice in 4 months was, as expected, very traumatic for her and us. Rivers was her nurse both times and was truly AMAZING on both occasions. Upon her arrival the second time, he immediately recognized her and resumed the rapport he had developed with her just three months prior. My daughter was very pleased by this and felt safe and comfortable being under his care. Her family members, too, shared this comfort as soon as we realized he was her nurse again. Rivers was very caring, attentive, and accommodating. He was very good when helping her to the bathroom giving her enough independence to safely recover and regain strength, all the while preserving her dignity. He did everything for her with a pleasantness that made her feel truly cared for. It must be said that my daughter had one goal after surgery - to go home!

She has been in and out of the hospital many times over the past 5 years dealing with lung and brain cancer. Many times, she wants to go home earlier than when she is released. Keeping her patient and positive through this has proven to be a challenge at times. Rivers was great at balancing this and explaining it to her in a way that made sense and was satisfactory to her in light of her desire to go home. Being able to do that in a respectful, sweet manner is a feat. Specifically, Rivers was very good when he told her we had to wait for the results of the MRI before we could go home. He was very patient and explained everything the best he could to her. He physically got on her level each time he communicated with her which was reassuring to her during such an uncertain time. He always passed on accurate information in a way that was easy to understand and able to be processed. He would sit down, hold her hand, look at her in the eyes, and talk to her- whether she needed reassurance about what was happening or simply a bit of encouragement. I think he’s a very caring nurse. This ability to comfort while providing quality care is one of the gifts God has endowed him with. We just thank you so much for him and the times he cared for my daughter!
