Her actions went beyond her duties, showing the true heart of nursing, compassion, understanding, and a willingness to be there in the most challenging times.
A young woman came to our unit PACU after experiencing an early miscarriage, and from the moment she came into our hospital, it was clear she understood the emotional plight of the situation. Despite the medical challenges at hand, she demonstrated a deep sense of empathy, not only for the patient but for the patient's unusual request. The patient had requested the tissue after a D&C (Missed AB) to take care of the remains as a family.
Supervisors were involved in researching if this was possible, and the process, and spoke specifically with the patient and their family. They were discharged home. Yesterday, the lab notified the supervisor that the 'tissue' was being released by the lab, and that the family could pick it up. Jamie called the family, discussed with them in the most sensitive and respectful manner. She provided emotional support and told them that she would be the one who would hand them their 'baby'. Her actions went beyond her duties, showing the true heart of nursing, compassion, understanding, and a willingness to be there in the most challenging times. She went to the gift shop and bought some items that she was able to wrap up the tissue, and some items that provided comfort.
For these reasons and more, I strongly believe that Jamie deserves to be recognized with the DAISY Award for her outstanding, compassionate, caring, and professional manner and her contributions to OUR nursing department at HAMC.
