She always made sure he was comfortable, she patiently and knowledgeably answered our endless and often frantic questions about the assortment of medicines and the different alarms and beeping that are part and parcel of an ICU, and she was always present and accommodating.
When I brought my brother to the ER at St. Joe's, we had no idea he was so close to death. After he crashed in the ER when his airway closed and his heart stopped, after the ER team called the DART team to perform an emergency crike, after they had to do CPR to restart his heart, after his blood pressure crashed to 40/40, after the chaplains rushed to our side to support us as the ventilator kept my brother alive in the ICU, after all this, Marina was there. Marina was a source of joy, strength, grace, good humor, knowledge, patience, and helpfulness during my brother's stay in the ICU at St. Joe's. The long days and nights watching my brother struggle for life were made bearable by the professionalism, experience, and compassion of the entire staff at St Joe's. After two long weeks in the ICU, my brother was finally moved to the respiratory floor to finish his recovery, and while this was a tremendous source of relief and hope, we did miss our ICU nurses! Make no mistake, all of the doctors, nurses, chaplains, greeters, and staff were absolutely amazing, but Marina in the ICU stood out among them all. She helped care for my brother with compassion, humanity, dignity, and gentle, good humor. She always made sure he was comfortable, she patiently and knowledgeably answered our endless and often frantic questions about the assortment of medicines and the different alarms and beeping that are part and parcel of an ICU, and she was always present and accommodating. Even though she was my brother's ICU nurse, she was our family's nurse in many ways, too. I often think about how everyone at St. Joe's collectively saved my brother's life, and Marina, especially with her genuine heart of care, deserves all the Daisies in the world.
