Our family member spent several admissions on the 7 South nursing unit during her fierce, but short battle with metastatic gastric cancer. She always received superior care from this amazing group of caregivers, not only from the staff nurses and CNAs but also from the nurse manager, Jennifer Towson, who always seemed to find a way to get our family member a private room even during high census.
This final stay was the longest and the toughest. The patient was a 43-year-old wife and mother of a 4-year-old daughter. She did receive her final dose of chemo during this stay and ultimately decided to go on hospice care during this admission. It was decided that she would be too sick to transition her care to home or another facility. The entire nursing staff mobilized to provide the best care possible to the patient, her wife, and her daughter. They provided strong emotional support to the entire family. They shared many laughs and tears with the family. They provided an endless number of snacks for the family, even ordering special donuts for the patient’s daughter and bringing in cake and ice cream to celebrate the patient’s mother-in-law’s birthday, which happened to be the day the patient passed away. They made the room as comfortable as possible. They even brought a stretcher into the room to place beside the patient’s bed so her wife and daughter could be right beside the patient. They gave special permission for the patient’s beloved dog, Bailey, to come in and make one final visit.
Our family cannot say enough good things about this unit and especially the nurses listed above who went above and beyond the call of duty to care for the entire family. I, myself, a former 7 South nurse, have a happy heart knowing the next generation of nurses are just as caring and compassionate as my generation of nurses.
The experience the 7 South nursing staff gave to our family allowed our family member to pass away with dignity and grace, just as she lived her life. Our family cannot thank this unit enough for their care throughout our family member’s journey.
