Shay makes Dad feel like she knows him, is glad to see him, and is giving her best effort for him. That kindness and caring are priceless to us!
My father has had three inpatient stays at HFH in the past 6 months. Under a variety of difficult circumstances, Shay has been a bright spot in each of those stays. My parents, siblings, and I all say that Shay is the best! When she arrives for a shift, we breathe a sigh of relief.
Here are a couple of examples of the qualities that make her both skilled and compassionate:
Personal connection: Shay is so calm, personable, caring, and aware of the challenging dynamics of inpatient care. She can set aside the individual inconvenience of helping with a messy situation even when she is swamped. I don't recall her ever saying, "You're going to have to wait," but rather, "I'll be there as soon as I can." She connected with Dad right away, and he appreciated it so much. She asked during his first stay about the seed corn cap he wore in bed, then noticed that it was missing the next time he stayed. She brings warm blankets just because she knows how much he loves them. Bottom line: Shay makes Dad feel like she knows him, is glad to see him, and is giving her best effort for him. That kindness and caring are priceless to us!
Professionalism: Among many, our top example is medication management: Dad had some tricky situations with requiring meds brought from home over a weekend, recovery from meds having been administered at the wrong time of day, inpatient meds in different dosages than his normal prescription, etc. Shay always conducts thorough research and offers her best advice, going to bat to make changes if she thinks they are necessary. Once again, her outstanding memory from one stay to the next is incredible. She is able to recall which medication was a struggle during his previous stay and proactively circles to address a potential issue.
As a family, we definitely consider Shay to be an extraordinary nurse
