His respect, genuine concern, and excellent medical skills were a blessing to us at a most difficult time.
I received a phone call from UT Health’s Quitman Emergency Department informing me that my Father had been brought in by ambulance. When I arrived, Kaleb M was preparing to give my Dad a unit of blood. I could tell Dad was calm and at ease in Kaleb’s presence. Dad was hard of hearing, and this often posed problems when my sister or I could not be present. Kaleb took excellent care of my father throughout the day. He kept us informed of the tests and their results as we developed a treatment plan. He also made every effort to find us a room in Tyler and arrange transportation for us, always keeping us up to date. That was the week when UT experienced technical problems with its telephone system, making it difficult to find a hospital room at a larger facility for transfer. Kaleb and my Dad both served in the US Military. As the day went on, Kaleb drew on this common bond to interact with my father. His respect, genuine concern, and excellent medical skills were a blessing to us at a most difficult time. We were transferred to UT Tyler and then to the Hospice of East Texas, where my Dad died on August 3rd. In the weeks since, I have revisited every decision made along the way. As I look back at the first day there in Quitman’s ER, I can rest assured that he received the best care possible.
