Alan is much more than a healthcare provider; he is a true warrior for nurses and healthcare professionals. His role as a mentor and leader is unparalleled, serving as the benchmark for excellence and compassion in healthcare. Alan embodies the qualities of a father figure, professional mentor, and educator, inspiring all who have the privilege to work alongside him.
Alan has had a long career as an educator, manager/director, and role model for the professions of nursing as well as paramedicine.  He has spent his career in emergency medicine as both a registered nurse and a critical care paramedic.  He is an exceptional nurse who genuinely cares for his patients and is a valuable resource to his co-workers as well as the physicians.  He is a well-respected member of any team.  Alan’s mind is like a computer and is filled with so many pearls of wisdom that help his team think better in all situations and understand the “why” behind what is happening.

Alan loves to teach and is always ready to share his knowledge and experience with others.  He has been the unit educator for the emergency department and is now the clinical director of that department.  He spent many years teaching/training in the Paramedicine Program at the local university, and now teaches for a different paramedic program affiliated with the county EMS services.  He is also a certified instructor for the American Heart Association in the ACLS, BLS, and PALS disciplines; as well as an instructor for the Emergency Nurses Association trauma courses (TNCC and ENPC).  Students in any of these classes gain valuable information and tips to ensure safe practice for them and safe care for their patients.

Alan has spent many years on the local and regional emergency preparedness committees and has helped to train all employees of Madisonhealth in disaster management. His expertise was invaluable during both the EBOLA and Covid-19 outbreaks to train our teams in Donning/Doffing of PPE and the use of Respirators.

He has a diverse skillset as he has functioned as the interim manager/director of Infusion Therapy, Risk, IT, and Respiratory therapy.  He has also served for many years as the assistant coroner for Madison County.

Alan became a nurse in 1976 and has worked in the profession since that time. He was inspired by his nurse parents to pursue a career.  He worked at Massena Hospital in New York then relocated to Rexburg Idaho where he has made significant contributions to the community.

Alan has served at Madison Memorial for over four decades in various roles, gaining invaluable experience in each department. His expertise and compassionate care have made him an invaluable asset to the organization. The majority of his career has been spent in the ER where he is often the go-to person.

In 1978 Alan became a paramedic/firefighter for Madison County. In 1998, Alan was the driving force in getting the EMS service from a Basic EMT Unit to one of the few Critical Care Paramedic Units in the State of Idaho. During that process, he was very involved in writing the protocols and the procedures, training guide, and the actual instructing of the paramedics, which he continues to this day. Alan was one of the first paramedics in Madison County and served full-time with Madison County Paramedics for over 25 years. This was done concurrently while working as a nurse full-time in the ER at Madison Memorial.

Alan taught Para-medicine at Ricks College and later BYU-Idaho, teaching hundreds of students from all over the world. As an instructor, paramedic, and registered nurse, Alan has high expectations for good patient care and has the ability to convey the importance of it to his students and fellow workers.  He was able to travel the country with the paramedic students working in various hospitals to help expand their scope of knowledge in hospitals in Las Vegas, Grady Memorial in Atlanta and in Boston.

Alan has served on the LEPC Emergency Planning for District 7 for several decades and was instrumental in writing and getting a grant for mass casualty equipment that the hospital currently has for the district. He has provided training all over the country for emergencies helping other counties, states and districts to better prepare.

Despite his preference for working behind the scenes, Alan’s exceptional contributions have not gone unnoticed. He has received awards, including the Outstanding Paramedic award in 1998, the Exceptional Service Award for teaching in 1990, Provider of the Year in 2000, Outstanding Nurse/Paramedic in 2022 and the prestigious DAISY Award in 2023. In spite of a very busy life, Alan counts as his greatest achievements his loving wife, four children, and his grandchildren.

Alan’s unwavering dedication to healthcare and his passion for helping others have left an enduring legacy. As his former students and colleagues continue to apply their knowledge and skills, Alan’s impact on the healthcare community will undoubtedly persist for years to come.

Many former students and colleagues have gone on to become Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, CRNAs, and several doctors. There are many today who are alive because of Alan.
