Andrew took the time to understand the patient's love for football and has used this interest as a motivational tool for encouraging good behavior.
It is with great respect and admiration that I nominate Andrew for the DAISY Nurse Leader Award. Since his transition into his current role in March, he has shown unparalleled dedication, compassion, and leadership in his role, and this particular story exemplifies his extraordinary commitment to patient care and staff morale.
In one of our units, we have had a long-term behaviorally/developmentally delayed patient who has struggled with behavioral issues. His unpredictable behavior has posed significant challenges to the staff. Despite these difficulties, this nurse leader hasn't given up on him. He firmly believes in the patient's potential for improvement and treats the patient with the utmost dignity and respect. When coming up with strategies to yield behavioral progress, this nurse leader took the time to learn and understand what the patient likes to implement a more personalized and innovative strategy. He took the time to understand the patient's love for football and has used this interest as a motivational tool for encouraging good behavior.
Another time this nurse leader showed compassion and dedication to care was when we were on a unit celebrating an achievement, and there was an elderly lady with a cane hobbling down the hall. This nurse leader was concerned that this visitor would struggle to make it to her car from the 5th floor. This nurse leader kicked into action and assisted this visitor into a chair while he awaited a wheelchair being brought up so he could escort this visitor to her car. He maintained conversations with her all the way to her car, and even assisted her into the vehicle and made sure her GPS would work for her drive home. Had this nurse leader not been aware and jumped into action, this visitor could have fallen and been injured.
His willingness, awareness, and compassion made a difference. This nurse leader deserves this award for his thoughtfulness, willingness to serve, compassionate heart, dedication, commitment to care, and leadership. We appreciate everything he brings to our team.
