I am forever grateful that my husband was cared for by Ms. Rodie on that one day in October that not only transformed the clinical trajectory but also enabled a dignified end-of-life experience for my beloved husband.
I am writing to commend Mia Rodie, RN. She is a nurse extraordinaire. One day of professional nursing care can profoundly alter patient and family outcomes. I am forever grateful that my husband was cared for by Ms. Rodie on that one day in October that not only transformed the clinical trajectory but also enabled a dignified end-of-life experience for my beloved husband.

My husband was the beneficiary of Mia Rodie's extraordinary care on the day a team of critical care doctors came to the bedside and asked: if moved to the ICU would he consent to intubation, if his condition deteriorated further. Ms. Rodie witnessed this conversation and my husband's decision, who, with all his strength, said: 'no' - he would now become DNR. The doctors left the room, but Ms. Rodie remained. She immediately understood this was a moment to transform a painful situation into a meaningful end-of-life experience for my husband and our family. Ms. Rodie immediately acted to secure a comfort care room on the unit and explained that we could remain on the unit and continue receiving all the best nursing care being provided, and family and friends could visit. Care management would shift to comfort from curative. Ms. Rodie's clinical wisdom, which comprised her ability to blend compassion with the protection of patient-nurse integrity while serving as an advocate, was demonstrated. That capacity to remain in the room at a time of great stress, process the situation, and act to ensure the patient receives the best possible outcome is extraordinary.

Ms. Rodie took me to the comfort care room - when she opened the door I felt I could breathe. There was the mighty East River. My husband has always loved the sea. Here he would find peace. His bed was moved immediately. The privacy of the room and the anteroom permitted space for family and close friends to visit my husband in his final few days. The Patient Care Director graciously permitted family members and close friends to come to see my husband for the last time.

End-of-life care is amorphous - it was difficult for me and our family to realize and reconcile that we had entered this final phase.  My husband had battled metastatic renal cancer for more than twelve years and had been hospitalized in critical condition many times during those years of treatment. We expected he would make his way back to his beautiful life another time.

Ms. Rodie had the clinical experience and wisdom to know that all signs indicated these were my husband's final days. She made certain he received impeccable, well-conceived, and thoughtfully delivered care. With thanks and appreciation for all the outstanding care my husband received on 4 North during each shift and for the impressive leadership of the Patient Care Director.

I hope all nurses can learn what Ms. Rodie already knows - patient needs can bе anticipated and action taken; the care environment can be altered to address patient needs; care is focused on the patient and the family; and authenticity is therapeutic. Mia Rodie demonstrates compassion, integrity, and advocacy, and is a role model for end-of-life caring. I commend her and recommend her for the DAISY Award. Mia Rodie is a Nurse Extraordinaire. Thank you for your leadership on behalf of all WCMC Nurses.
