Kelsey was the OR nurse that day and did not have a patient after my delivery, so she graciously offered to take me to the NICU and monitor me even though I wasn't her patient or responsibility anymore.
I am a labor and delivery nurse who works with Kelsey. She oriented me to the unit when I first became a nurse. Recently, I became her patient when I was scheduled to have a c-section to deliver my first baby, a girl named E. Right before the procedure, I was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia and was put on a Magnesium drip. Unfortunately, E was admitted to the NICU after delivery, and I was unable to see her or hold her for very long after she was born. Once I was moved to the mother-baby unit, I was told I was not able to go see E at the NICU while I was on the magnesium drip unless a nurse could take me and monitor me while I was there. I would not be able to see my baby for 24 hours, which was a devastating blow. Kelsey was the OR nurse that day and did not have a patient after my delivery, so she graciously offered to take me to the NICU and monitor me even though I wasn't her patient or responsibility anymore. She made sure I was safe while on the magnesium drip, while also taking into consideration my concerns as a new mother. Because of Kelsey, I was able to do skin-to-skin with E on the day of her birth, which is a special moment and memory that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Kelsey went above and beyond to make this happen, and I will forever be grateful for that experience.
