Every day, it is evident that Millie loves what she does, and on this particular occasion, she made life-changing moves that made a significant difference not only for the patient but also for his wife.
I want to nominate my coworker, Millie, for the DAISY Award. Daily, she goes above and beyond; however, one day, while I was charged in GI preop, she showed how nursing is not only her calling but her true passion. She received a patient from a rehab facility that she had to move to Bay 31, as this patient was unable to stand, transfer, or assist in any mobility. She did not receive any information regarding medication or history from the rehab. After making the patient comfortable, she asked the wife about medications, and the wife was unaware of what she was receiving in the rehab. She called them repeatedly and was hung up on each time. She then called from her cellphone so they wouldn’t recognize the number and requested to speak to the director of the facility. She was finally able to get a history, and when she inquired about skin integrity, she was told that the patient was bathed daily and had no skin issues.
She returned to the bay to find that the patient had a distinct odor. She spoke more with the wife to find that she felt her husband was being neglected and that they were trying to kick him out, telling her they would send him home because he had no benefits. The wife broke down crying, and immediately, Millie went into action. She gave him a full bath, washed his hair, obtained new clothing, and cleaned his catheter. She reached out to a manager to contact social services. While the patient was still in the bay with his wife, social services contacted the wife and provided her with three new options for relocating her husband. It was at that point that the wife hugged Millie, and they both began to cry. Millie told her, "Don’t worry, that’s what we are here for. I love what I do, so this was easy." Every day, it is evident that Millie loves what she does, and on this particular occasion, she made life-changing moves that made a significant difference not only for the patient but also for his wife. It is a pleasure to work with people like this. This patient entered looking sad with his head down. His wife entered with a sorrowful look. Due to the care they received, he sat up straighter when he left, and his wife was smiling. Millie followed them to ensure they had everything they needed, even during discharge.
