Hanh went above and beyond to ensure this young patient gets the right care, at the right place, in a timely manner.
If someone asked me to describe the unseen work of nurses, I would say I have seen it many times, most especially when I work with Hanh Vu. There was a particular event when there was a 32-year-old patient in CVCU who was critically ill with a large mediastinal mass, whom the doctors wanted to transfer to another facility for oncology. The patient was emergently transferred to a capable facility that day due to the diligence of Hanh. It took “only” over 8 hours of back-to-back calls, starting from 859AM until the patient left UMC at 622pm. During this time frame, Hanh utilized her experiences as an Oncology RN, Care Coordinator, and Nurse Navigator to facilitate this transfer. Due to the complexity of the patient case, it was challenging to find the appropriate transport services and skilled staff to move the patient safely. At the last minute, when the ground crew was at the bedside, they realized they could not manage the patient’s needs. Hanh was able to coordinate with the ground ambulance staff and UMC staff to find a solution. A lot of people do not see the dedication of the nurses who work in a different role than that of a bedside RN. For me, compassion is also shown through actions. Hanh went above and beyond to ensure this young patient gets the right care, at the right place, in a timely manner. Sometimes, we nurse navigators get calls from providers who sometimes express frustration or have misconceptions about the complexity of patient transfers. Hanh would always show patience and professionalism in handling these types of calls. Additionally, Hanh has always been patient with us, her team members. She simplifies tasks for us, such as organizing how our data is managed. This is just one of the many things she contributes to make our work easier. Her empathy does not only extend to the patients, but to us, her fellow team members.
