You could hear from the different voices, the ER had a couple of patients that night. But it seemed as if Mom was the only one under Alison’s care.
Nomination #1:
I am writing this from my mother and myself. On two separate dates, my mother was fortunate to have the blessing of being treated by Alison in the Emergency Room. Alison is phenomenal, to say the least. We will start with the care that she provided on December 26th. Mom presented with breathing difficulties and an increased heart rate. Mom was hooked up to monitor her heart rate, her SPO2, and her blood pressure. It was a chilly night, such after mom removed her jacket to be placed on the monitor, she got cold. Alison went and retrieved a heated blanket for Mom and made sure she was comfortable while they were waiting for lab work to come back. You could hear from the different voices, the ER had a couple of patients that night. But it seemed as if Mom was the only one under Alison’s care. She made it a point to stop back in numerous times to check on Mom during the couple of hours Mom was in the ER room. When she would stop in to check on Mom, she would converse, and she made Mom very comfortable.
I can also recall how gentle and caring Alison was when she removed Mom's IV and the heart monitor patches. She seemed as if Mom wasn’t just a patient, but she seemed as if she was caring for a family member. The second occurrence was on December 30th. Mom was seen in the ER again for breathing difficulties and an increased heart rate. Mom had Alison again, and as soon as Mom was hooked up to the monitor, Alison slipped out and retrieved a heated blanket for Mom. You could tell Mom was much more relaxed, seeing that it was Alison she had for her nurse. Of course, Mom had to have an IV and Dr Cannova ordered steroids via the IV, a CT scan to look for blood clots, and an EKG. Well, again, it seemed as if Alison had only Mom as her patient that night.
Stopping in “just to check on Mom”, but it seemed literally like Alison’s only patient was my Mom. Now, while Mom was Alison’s patient, she also provided me with the same care and compassion that she showed to my mom. She should be on the training board for all new incoming nurses. We would give Alison the following scores on a 10-point system:
Quality of care 10+
Comforting 10+
Compassion 10+
Professionalism 10+
Clinical Expertise 10+
While most scoring only goes on a scale of 1-10, we would give her 15’s for each of the above on a 10-point scale.
Nomination #2:
Late Thanksgiving night, we brought our poor, miserable 6-year-old in with a 104.6 fever. We live in Ohio, but we were in the Clare Area visiting family for the Holiday. Our daughter had been to the doctor a few days prior and was on medication, so we thought she was on the mend. We arrived at the ER extremely worried. It was very evident that they were pretty busy. We had a bad experience at this ER prior, so we weren’t looking forward to this, but Nurse Alison was amazing. She was very calm, very collected, knew exactly what to say to our daughter and to me (mom) to keep us calm. She was very understanding, patient, and direct.
My husband is very nervous when it comes to our kids. Alison picked up on that immediately and did a wonderful job of telling us both the info we needed and keeping him at bay. After an IV, projectile vomit, X-rays & lots of fluids, we were set to go. She went above and beyond explaining things to us and remaining very calm and confident even after our daughter puked on her! It definitely didn’t feel like she was just doing her job; it really felt like she was taking care of our girl and us, very, very exhausted parents. She really stood out and made this experience as painless as possible. We came into the ER around midnight on Thanksgiving. We live 4 hours away, but we were up visiting for the holiday. Our 6-year-old had a very high fever and heart rate. We were very nervous as she was just miserable and so sick. Alison was calm and very direct, as a former medical health professional, I appreciated this so much. She knew exactly what to do and when to do it, and was very confident and put my mind at ease. She was very sweet and continually checked in on our girl and us.
