Amire exceeded all expectations and went above and beyond to make sure our daughter was comfortable and well taken care of.
One night in April, my 9-year-old daughter started having severe abdominal pain. We brought her into the emergency room. I should probably take a step back and explain what a special gift my daughter is to all of us. After years of struggling to conceive, my husband and I accepted that we were blessed with two children, and a third was not in the cards for us. Fast forward 8 years, and the unthinkable happened, and we suffered an immeasurable loss of a family member. A month and a half later, we found out we were pregnant. We love all of our kids equally, but Our Sweet Girl has been a special gift from God at a time that we felt nothing but heartache and pain. I say all of this to let you know that we can be extremely overprotective and critical of everything when it comes to her. So, when I say that we received the absolute best care possible, it should not be taken lightly.
From the moment we entered the room, Amire was waiting on us with a kind smile. She was extremely gentle and patient with our daughter. Before placing her IV, she took extra time to explain to her what it all would look and feel like. Amire took her time and was very thorough in her assessment. Our daughter got very sick and started throwing up, so she asked for a hair band to hold her hair back. I did not have one. Amire stopped what she was doing and made a hairband for her.
After her diagnosis, we learned we needed to be transported to UVA. Amire remained calm and quickly set up our transfer and had it ready. She accomplished all of this while mentoring a nursing student, taking the time to explain her actions and their rationale. Nursing excellence is not a grandiose story, but rather a collection of small details that bring comfort and support to patients and their families. The tone of voice, smiles, words of comfort, explanations, compassion, and understanding are all qualities that the Barnes family had in mind when they created the DAISY Award. Amire exceeded all expectations and went above and beyond to make sure our daughter was comfortable and well taken care of. We can never thank her enough, and the rest of the ER staff, for everything they did for our Sweet Girl!
