He celebrates our wins, supports us through losses, and ensures that we feel seen, heard, and valued. In a unit where burnout is a constant threat, Alex has brought renewed morale and a sense of connection.
It is with great admiration and respect that we nominate Alex Kim, our ICU Department Manager, for the DAISY Nurse Leader Award. Though he has only held this leadership role for less than a year, his impact has been immediate, transformative, and deeply felt by every member of our team.

Before stepping into leadership, Alex spent years working alongside us as an ICU nurse. He understands the demands, intensity, and emotional weight of critical care—not in theory, but in lived experience. This foundation has shaped his approach to leadership in the most meaningful way. When Alex became our manager, he didn’t just take on a new title, he embraced a responsibility to uplift, support, and advocate for his team with the same compassion and excellence he showed at the bedside.

From day one, Alex has demonstrated what it means to be a true servant leader. He listens—genuinely and attentively—to our concerns, frustrations, and hopes for this unit. But more importantly, he acts on them. Many of the changes we had long wished for—improvements in workflow, communication, staffing, and support—are now becoming reality under his guidance. His leadership is grounded in action and not just through words.

What sets Alex apart is his unwavering commitment to people. He sees beyond roles and responsibilities and focuses on the individuals behind them. He checks in on staff not only during shifts, but also during life’s challenges. He celebrates our wins, supports us through losses, and ensures that we feel seen, heard, and valued. In a unit where burnout is a constant threat, Alex has brought renewed morale and a sense of connection.

Leadership in the ICU requires more than clinical knowledge—it requires heart, resilience, and the ability to inspire those around you. Alex embodies all of these qualities. He leads by example, shows up for his team, and consistently fosters a culture of respect, collaboration, and growth. The ICU is a better place because of his presence.

For his vision, compassion, and tireless dedication to both patient care and staff well-being, we wholeheartedly nominate Alex Kim for the DAISY Nurse Leader Award. He is exactly the kind of leader this award was created to honor.
