Brooke made sure she had dignity, above all. She never made my grandma feel like she was a burden or that she had other places to be.
We are nominating Brooke for three main reasons. First, Brooke was so compassionate to my grandma, who was in the process of dying. She treated her with kindness and ensured she always felt supported. She would explain things to her, sometimes over and over again, when she had questions. Brooke made sure she had dignity, above all. She never made my grandma feel like she was a burden or that she had other places to be. She treated her as if she were her grandma. Secondly, Brooke found a specific way of communicating with my grandma that worked for her. She quickly realized that my tough old grandma wouldn’t say she was in “pain”, only in “discomfort”. Brooke would ask what her discomfort level was, as opposed to her pain level. This allowed my grandma to be honest about how she was feeling and what she needed. She did this with a few things, such as being “restless” instead of anxious or nervous. This also enabled my grandma to have the treatment that she needed. Finally, we’re nominating Brooke because, most of all, she brought some joy to my grandma's days. She would find ways to make my grandma smile or giggle in a very understated way. My grandma is not someone who will find everything funny, but Brooke found a way to make her laugh. This meant the world to my family and me. Brooke was only with my grandma for a day, but she made a lasting impression. When I told her I’d be nominating Brooke for this award, she said, “Oh heavens yes”- despite not having many words to say all day. Thank you, Brooke, for all you did for my grandma.
