Despite the challenges, Alyssa made it a point to visit M.R. every time she was on shift, offering comfort and companionship during her most difficult moments.
M.R. was a young, vibrant patient undergoing bone marrow transplant treatment on E1 in May. Alyssa, her primary RN, quickly forged a strong therapeutic bond with her. They exchanged stories and shared laughter, transforming the clinical environment into one filled with warmth and connection. Tragically, M.R.'s treatment did not succeed, and her condition gradually deteriorated, leading to her transfer to D1 ICU. Despite the challenges, Alyssa made it a point to visit M.R. every time she was on shift, offering comfort and companionship during her most difficult moments.
One day, Alyssa learned that M.R. would be transitioning to hospice care but wished to ring the bell on E1—a cherished tradition celebrating patients who reach significant treatment milestones. With a heavy heart, Alyssa reached out to the provider team, coordinated with the ICU RN on details, and together they carefully wheeled M.R. back to E1. As M.R. rang the bell, her face lit up with a radiant smile, and she sang her favorite song. The nurses on E1 were deeply moved by this poignant moment, a powerful reminder of resilience and hope amidst sorrow. M.R. was discharged home to hospice the same day; she was so grateful that she had the chance to ring the bell.
Reflecting on the experience, Alyssa said, "It’s easy to forget that we are caring for real people with real lives. I love BMT because it continually reminds me of that. Hearing their stories and spending weeks getting to know them as individuals—not just patients—makes this work incredibly meaningful."
